As a legislator, Gannon said, he supported the physician assistant program as a way to offer additional medical care to underserved areas of rural Kansas. However, more than a decade later, when he took over the reigns of the Board of Healing Arts, Gannon said he was surprised to discover that the majority of the state’s roughly 200 physician assistants have settled east of U.S. 81 leaving his area with not enough workers and basically killing his hopes for stronger medical care in the area.
