When it comes to coin collecting, there aren’t really a lot of supplies that one needs. Here’s a quick list of some coin collecting supplies that every coin collector should have.
The first thing you’re going to want to have is a set of gloves for handling and examining your coins. The oils on the human hand can have a detrimental effect on coins. You’ll want to keep those oils off your coins to keep those coins in their best shape. Gloves are a great way to keep your coins protected as you examine them. Make sure to use gloves that are soft and won’t scratch or damage your collection.
You are also going to want to get yourself a magnifying glass, as well as a table lamp. The magnifying glass is obviously used to examine your collection. You won’t need a magnigying glass that is more than 5x. Any more than that is overkill. A table lamp is good for adding light as you examine your coins. These items are easy to find, and you’ll have no trouble in getting them.
The most important thing is getting protection for your coins. You have a great deal of options to choose from. You can get simple cheap cardboard to house your coins, or you can get the more expensive acrylic protectors. The cheap cardboard folders are good for those just starting out, or even those that sell their coins at flea markets or shows. The cardboard makes it easy to write specific information down above the coin for ease of remembering the coin specifics.
Acrylic holders can be cheap or expensive, depending on what you need. There are flip pockets that hold a single coin, and have a fold over cover that can house a card with the coin information. There are acrylic capsules that house a single coin, and that coin can be viewed at all angles. These are good to house special coins, but there is no place to write coin information down. Depending on the price, you can get air tight and non-air tight protectors.
As you can see, there aren’t a lot of supplies needed for collecting coins. And what supplies there are, are generally easy to come by, and you can add protectors as you go, when time and money permits. So if you are collecting pennies, nickles or silver eagle dollars, the supplies are basically the same.
